Malawi Under-14 team’s participation in the Dana Cup in Denmark will wait a little longer, as organisers of this year’s event have quashed the country’s application due to late submission.

Football Association of Malawi (FAM) planned to send the junior national team to the international event scheduled for July 20-25 but FAM technical director John Kaputa confirmed yesterday that organisers said Malawi’s application came late.

“They said the application had to be sent to them a year before this year’s contest. Therefore, our application will be considered for next year’s event,” Kaputa said.

Nevertheless, Kaputa said they would still assemble a national Under-14 team during the school holiday for the Gorthia Cup which might take place in Sweden later this year.

Malawi will be participating in the Dana Cup for the second time after winning the trophy in 1997 when the Under-18 national team had players such as Peter Mponda and James Chimera Jnr.

They also took part in the Gorthia Cup reaching the semi-finals.
